Mobile Drawing: Marking Place, Making Networks

Here’s my project proposal as a PowerPoint Presentation:

I’ve been thinking about how we live in an increasingly networked society. We are now able to stay connected to each other via mobile telephones and the internet as we move through our daily lives.

Recent changes in wireless technologies have changed how we communicate with each other. Our sense of community has also changed radically in our increasingly mobile society.

I have been making drawings that use simple polygons to connect points and create form. I see these drawings as graphs of a network. Visually these drawings also refer the polygons of wire frame meshes used to create 3D graphics.

I am interested in how we create a community of like-minded people and how we arrive at our sense of place where we feel we belong.

I am wondering if I could use the locations of various mobile devices to create drawings? I’m also wondering if it is possible to make drawings that are self-generating and change over time, based on the changing locations of our personal networks of friends.

I’m researching various ways to map the locations of friends or a self-identified community. I’m interested how drawing can be a prototype for collaboration and participation.

I’m hoping to make these maps into drawings that are viewable over the internet or on mobile devices like cell phones. I’d like to find a way to make these drawings change in real time.

I’m interested in subverting mobile phone technology with its ability to “track” users locations through built in GPS for artistic purposes. I’m interested in the look of drawings that can be generated using mathematical equations like Voronoi diagrams.

I have been making drawings daily over the past month.

I’m enjoying my ability to make these drawings based on my own aesthetic decisions.

One worry I have, is that once I figure out a way to generate drawings based on these ideas, I’m not convinced that they will be as interesting as the drawings that I have been making.

Thank you. I look forward to your feedback.

    Excellent David!
Your research is really interesting. It’s amazing how a visual representation of our movement around the globe in real time can give us the perception of our existence in this “mobile” world.
Perhaps it’s not going to be easy especially from the techical and mathematical point of view but if you succeed to overcome these difficulties the result will be great. A living, graphical representation of our mobile lives! It’s something that for many obvious reasons, no artist even in the recent past could have been able to do!

    Good luck!!!
